Lady Julian Bridge opens

On 15th September 2009, a bridge named after Mother Julian was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Evelyn Collishaw. A plaque dedicating the bridge to Julian's memory was unveiled at the Riverside end of the bridge.

The mayor was joined by Sister Pamela and Sister Violet of All Hallows Convent, who had proposed the name for the bridge in a competition held earlier this year.

'People come to the church where Lady Julian wrote her book from all over the world,' said Sister Pamela (pictured below, right, with the mayor and Sister Violet).

'A bridge is a symbol of connection, and it will allow people to get from the railway station to the church. Julian would have liked that.'

The £2.5-million bridge straddles the River Wensum at the St Anne's Wharf site, providing a crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists. It links the Riverside area with King Street and is just a few hundred yards from the Julian Shrine and Church.

Work on the bridge started in January 2009 and it has been built by the Norfolk Strategic Partnership, working in association with Norwich City Council.

Sister Pamela led a blessing ceremony on the new bridge with some of the Julian Companions, and a delegation from the Order of Julian of Norwich in Wisconsin.
