Melvyn Matthews

Canon Matthews is a prolific writer on spirituality and was until recently Chancellor of the beautiful and historic Wells Cathedral. He has a long-term interest in the meaning and relevance of mysticism to the Church which began when he was a University Chaplain. His published works include Both Alike to Thee, The Hidden Word, God’s Space in You and Nearer Than Breathing.

In his latest book, Awake to God, Canon Matthews attempts to bring together the different themes of self-emptying and participation which postmodern theologians have brought back into the conversation about God. He relates these themes to the Christian tradition and with the insights of some of the great mystics and thinkers of the past—Meister Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, Thomas Traherne, Etty Hillesum and Paul Celan—in order to suggest a style of being and seeing for the contemporary Christian.

“Mysticism is a form of deconstruction, a way of deliberately unravelling the falsities to which devotion and religious practice, and religious speech, are prone” (from Both Alike To Thee).

“I believe the mystical way is open to all, not just to some special people, and the task of the Church is to make this way available to all in the midst of their life circumstances” (from Finding Courage to Face Our Illusions – interview with Clifton Diocese).
