Welcome

The Friends of Julian is an international association of people who have been inspired by the spiritual legacy of the medieval mystic and writer Julian of Norwich.

St Julian’s Church was built over 1,000 years ago alongside the river Wensum in Norwich — at the time, the second most important city in England. Julian lived as an anchoress (a hermit) in a cell attached to the church, from which she took her name.

It was here that she wrote her book The Revelations of Divine Love, otherwise known as Showing of Love and also, simply, as Showings. Julian’s hermitage was pulled down at the Reformation but it was rebuilt after wartime bombing. The cell is now the site of a shrine where people come from all over the world to reflect on Julian’s message and to offer prayers in her name.

The Friends of Julian exists to encourage interest in Julian’s life and work. We do this through facilitating a prayer network, carrying out educational initiatives, and by offering guidance and resources for pilgrims and visitors to the Julian Shrine.

The Friends is a registered charity and our work is undertaken by Trustees and volunteers, with some paid assistance. We rely on the generosity and support of Friends and donors to resource the Julian Centre and to finance the ongoing development of our educational work. Please help us by making an online donation and by taking out a subscription and becoming a Friend.

Whether your interest in Julian is religious or secular, we hope this website will help you on your pilgrimage. We invite you to read and study the work of this pre-eminent English mystic and literary figure; to come along to the Julian Festival in May; to visit the Julian Shrine; to make a retreat at the guesthouse; and to journey through prayer into the contemplative heart of Julian’s message, which is love.
